What backend engineers forgot because of frameworks

Miyuri Lokuhewage30 Jan 2026 · Software Engineer

Most of the noise is gone. And that’s the problem.

Today, you can build a working API without ever thinking about how a request actually moves through a system. It feels productive until things go wrong.

A request does not magically “hit an endpoint.”

It arrives as raw bytes. It gets parsed. Headers are decoded. Bodies are buffered. Connections are reused or dropped. Time limits apply.

Frameworks compress all of this into one word: request.

So when latency spikes or memory leaks appear, we stare at controller code even though the real problem often happens before the controller exists.

What we quietly forgot:

? Requests are physical events, not function calls.

Backend engineering starts earlier than the framework lets you see.
