Kubernetes Workshop - Day 1

Sachin Jayalath16 Jan 2026

Kubernetes Fundamentals: Kubernetes, often abbreviated as K8s, is an open-source platform for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications. It handles complex orchestration tasks like self-healing, load balancing, and storage provisioning to ensure applications run reliably at scale.

What is Kubernetes? Kubernetes originated from Google's internal container management system and became open-source in 2014. It excels in declarative configuration, where users define the desired state of applications, and the system maintains it automatically. Key benefits include high availability, automated rollouts with rollbacks, and efficient resource utilization across clusters.

Core Architecture- Kubernetes clusters consist of a control plane and worker nodes. The control plane includes the API server for handling requests, scheduler for pod placement, controllers for state reconciliation, and etcd for storing cluster data. Worker nodes run kubelet to manage pods, kube-proxy for networking, and container runtime like containerd.

Key Objects- Pods represent the smallest deployable unit, encapsulating one or more containers with shared resources. Deployments manage pod replicas for stateless apps, enabling scaling and updates, while Services provide stable networking access to pods. ConfigMaps and Secrets handle non-sensitive and sensitive configuration data separately from code.

Essential Operations- Deploy applications using YAML manifests applied via kubectl, Kubernetes' command-line tool. Scale deployments with kubectl scale, expose services via LoadBalancer or Ingress, and update images for rolling upgrades. Tools like Minikube allow local cluster testing for beginners.

Getting Started- Install kubectl and Minikube to create a local cluster, then follow official tutorials to deploy, scale, and expose a sample app. Practice with interactive modules covering cluster creation, app deployment, and debugging to build foundational skills.
